Three Long-Term Providers to Retire in 2016

After a combined 107 years of practicing medicine in Kittitas County, three KVH providers will be retiring from clinical practice in 2016.

Don Solberg, MD, will retire from KVH Family Medicine – Ellensburg in July after 37 years of service.  He will continue to hold a half-time position with KVH as the Chief Medical Officer.  Dr. Solberg moved to Ellensburg in 1980 after he graduated from the University of Washington School of Medicine and completed a residency in Greeley, Colorado.

Jan Paxton, PA-C, will retire from KVH Family Medicine – Ellensburg in September after 30 years of service.  Jan joined KVH Family Medicine – Ellensburg (then named The Valley Clinic) in 1987 after she attended the University of Washington physician assistant program.

Paul Schmitt, MD, will retire from KVH Family Medicine – Cle Elum in December after 40 years of service.  After his graduation from the University of Michigan Medical School he did an internship at Swedish Hospital in Seattle, then spent three years as a medical officer for the Indian Health Service in New Mexico.  He moved to Roslyn in 1977.  He and the late Dr. John Anderson purchased the Cle Elum Clinic from Kittitas County Public Hospital District No. 2 in 1981, and later sold the clinic to Kittitas Valley Healthcare in 2005.

All three retiring providers practice family medicine.  This medical specialty emphasizes preventive care and the primary care of entire families.  It is also a medical specialty that leaves difficult to fill positions, especially in rural areas.  According to the Association of American Medical Colleges, there are estimated to be 13,000 to 31,000 fewer family medicine providers than needed in the United States by the year 2025.

The gap will be partially filled by new providers Kevin Martin, MD, and Megan DeSelms, PA-C, at KVH Family Medicine – Ellensburg.  Last year saw the addition of Chelsea Newman, PA-C, Zoe Carlson, ARNP, and Jennifer Simons, ARNP, at KVH Family Medicine – Cle Elum.
