It can be difficult to avoid desserts or other sweets during the holiday season. Using substitutes in holiday treats can offer a healthier alternative to traditional recipes. KVH Hospital will share tips on substitutions for both sugar and fats during a free healthier holiday desserts event on Tuesday, December 9, from 6 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. in the KVH Hospital Café. The event will include an informational session and a tasting of several sample recipes.
Some of the featured recipes will include a newer sugar substitute extracted from the Stevia rebaudiana plant that is sold under brand names like Truvia® and PureVia®. Using sugar substitutes can be especially helpful for patients who have diabetes or are on weight management programs. Stevia extracts in particular have only a very small effect on blood glucose (blood sugar) levels.
In addition to learning about sugar substitutions, attendees will learn tips and tricks on replacing saturated fats like butter and cream in their desserts with various alternatives.
Throughout the informational presentation, participants will be able to sample holiday recipes with ingredient substitutions, including carrot cake, pumpkin bars, and gluten free almond macarons made with Truvia® Baking Blend. Copies of the recipes will be available to take home.
Individuals with diabetes are invited to ask questions after the tasting session with the certified diabetes educators who will be on hand.
