Cancer Survivor Support Group
Kittitas Valley Healthcare is changing the hours of its cancer survivor support group to better meet the needs of its members. The support group will now meet from noon to 2 p.m. on the second Monday of the month. Previously, the group had met from 6:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m.
“Moving the support group to earlier in the day will make the meeting more accessible to patients with cancer. Those who are going through cancer treatment can become tired as the day continues,” according to Karen Schock, KVH Cancer Outreach Coordinator. Schock adds that more people who are undergoing treatment for cancer are continuing to work throughout their therapy. A meeting during the lunch hour may fit into an employee’s schedule, she says.
On March 11, the cancer support group will preview the Patient Channel series on “Living With Cancer.” The group will watch three to four short video clips that give general information about how to cope with the day-to-day realities of living with cancer. The clips can be helpful for those who have had a recent diagnosis, or who have been diagnosed some time ago.
The goal of the cancer support group is to bring patients and their families together with others who are undergoing similar experiences. The group is open to those who have any type of cancer and Schock works to guide patients towards resources that are specific to their cancer type.
The support group meets in the upstairs conference room at KVH Hospital. For more information, call (509) 962-7322.
