Ellensburg resident Michael Smith will serve as President of Kittitas County Public Hospital District No. 1 Board of Commissioners for the 2013 calendar year. The position, which rotates among five publicly elected board members, was also held by Smith in 2012.
Smith has served as a member of the board since his appointment in December 2003, following the death of Franklin D. Carlson. He was elected to fill the remaining four years of the six year term in the November 2005 election, and was re-elected to a full six year term in the November 2009 election.
Over the past twenty years, Smith has served the community in the land use planning field. He is currently the community development director for the City of Ellensburg. Smith is also trained and licensed as an attorney.
"I've always been public service oriented and have been a public servant for most of my career," said Smith. "When my kids were grown I found myself with extra time and gave thought to how I might use some of that time for the community. When I saw the announcement for a commissioner of the public hospital district in 2003, I thought it would be a wonderful opportunity to utilize my particular background and experience to help to further the health of the community."
Smith notes that his interest in the health field is in part due to his belief that the health of a community is an essential factor in ensuring the success of the community. Life-long health care experiences, both personally and with family members, also contributed to his interest.
The position of Vice President will be held by Joan Glover. Liahna Armstrong will hold the position of Secretary. Other members of the board include Jack Baker and Pam Wilson.
Kittitas County Public Hospital District No. 1 is the governing body for Kittitas Valley Community Hospital, which provides service to Kittitas County through its hospital facility in Ellensburg and outpatient clinics and specialty centers in Ellensburg and Cle Elum.
